Naţanz lies on the northern edge of the central Iranian plateau, at the foot of the Karkas mountains. From above, the town climbs gently up the slopes. Narrow lanes wind through the old core, gardens and orchards fill the spaces between houses, and the land beyond turns to dry hills and open ground. Water from the mountains supports the greenery around the town.
The town is known for its Jameh Mosque and the adjoining shrine complex of Sheikh Abd al-Samad, a group of buildings from the Ilkhanid era with a tall conical dome and fine tilework. Naţanz is also known for its orchards, particularly pears, grown in the cooler foothill climate.
