Varāmīn sits on a wide, flat plain south-east of Tehran, and its map reflects that openness. The Varamin plain has been farmed for a very long time, and the city was an important centre in the medieval period. Its Friday Mosque, begun in 1322 under the Ilkhanids, is a well-known example of Persian architecture of that era, and the Ala al-Din tower, a thirteenth-century fluted brick tomb tower, still stands in the city.
