Shahrīār lies in Tehran Province, on the broad plain west of the capital and south of Karaj. On the map, the city forms a dense cluster of streets surrounded by agricultural land, with long straight roads leading out to neighbouring towns and villages. The terrain is flat, and the pattern of fields and orchards around it gives the edges a regular texture.
Much of the city's growth has come in recent decades, as the Tehran metropolitan area expanded outward and many residents began commuting to the capital. Shahrīār remains an agricultural centre for the surrounding county, and irrigation channels and field boundaries still define the land between its neighbourhoods and nearby settlements.
