Nedroma lies in Tlemcen Province in north-western Algeria, in the foothills of the Trara Mountains, a short distance inland from the port of Ghazaouet and not far from the Moroccan border. It is one of the region's oldest towns. Its historic medina still forms a compact, walled core on the slope, easy to recognise on a map by its dense, winding lanes.
The Great Mosque of Nedroma, founded by the Almoravid ruler Yusuf ibn Tashfin in the eleventh century, is one of the earliest surviving monuments of that dynasty. The area is also associated with Abd al-Mu'min, founder of the Almohad state, who was born in this region. On the map, the medina's tightly packed streets contrast with the more open layout of the newer quarters.

Great Mosque quarter
The Almoravid mosque stands within the medina, surrounded by closely packed houses. This area has been at the centre of town life for more than nine centuries.
