Nepalgunj lies on the level plain of the western Terai, only a few kilometres from the border with India. Because the ground is so flat, the city has spread in every direction without a hill or ridge to stop it. The map shows a tight core of narrow lanes, then looser blocks, then farmland crossed by field tracks and irrigation lines.
The city is the main commercial centre of Banke District and a key transport hub for western Nepal. Its airport handles many of the flights to remote hill and mountain districts, and the road south crosses the border at Rupaidiha, making Nepalgunj a busy trading point between the two countries.

A main road runs south from the city to the crossing into India at Rupaidiha, a straight line that explains much of the city's trading life.
