Nova Zagora is in Sliven province in southeastern Bulgaria, on the open Upper Thracian Plain. From above, the town looks orderly. Its streets form a fairly regular grid, and the main axes lead to a central square. The land around it is flat and farmed, with long field strips that run to the horizon. The low ranges of the Sredna Gora rise to the north.
The rail line and main roads cross the plain toward Stara Zagora and Sliven, and villages are scattered at intervals in all directions. Just west of the town is Karanovo, a settlement mound excavated in the twentieth century. Its many layers of occupation reach back to the Neolithic, and it is one of the key sites for the prehistory of southeastern Europe.
