Nový Jičín was laid out in the Middle Ages to a clear plan, and the map still shows it. At the centre is a large square, close to rectangular, lined with arcaded burgher houses. A regular grid of lanes surrounds it, and the curve of the former fortifications is still visible where later ring streets trace the old edge.
The town is in the Moravian-Silesian Region, in the gently rising land between the Oder valley and the Beskydy foothills. It is known for its long hat-making tradition, which grew into a major industry here in the nineteenth century. It is also known for a main square that ranks among the best-preserved arcaded squares in the Czech lands.
