Nürtingen lies on the Neckar southeast of Stuttgart, in the Esslingen district. The river runs through the valley floor, and the historic centre climbs the slope above it, with streets rising toward the town church of St. Laurentius. The poet Friedrich Hölderlin spent his childhood in Nürtingen, and the town still honours that connection.
