Nyamata is the main town of Bugesera District in Rwanda's Eastern Province, south of Kigali. The land here is lower and flatter than much of hilly Rwanda, a region of gentle ridges, farmland and several lakes near the Burundi border. From above, the town is a clear centre along the main road, and newer neighbourhoods are filling in the surrounding plots.
The town is known across Rwanda and beyond for the Nyamata Genocide Memorial, a former church where many people were killed in 1994 and which is now a national memorial. In recent years Bugesera has also seen rapid growth, with new roads and development tied to the region's closer links with the capital.
