Oullins lies just south-west of Lyon, on the west side of the Rhône where the small Yzeron river comes down from the hills to meet it. On a map, the town fits closely into the Lyon metropolitan area. Its dense streets climb gently from the river plain toward the slopes, and the Yzeron valley runs through the town as a thin green line.
The railway to Saint-Étienne crosses the town, and Oullins has long been known for its large railway workshops. In 2013 Lyon's metro line B reached Oullins station, and it has since been extended further south. In 2024 Oullins merged with neighbouring Pierre-Bénite to form the commune of Oullins-Pierre-Bénite.
