Painesville is the seat of Lake County in north-eastern Ohio, about thirty miles east of Cleveland. The town grew up on high ground above the Grand River. On a map, the river loops along the western and northern edges of town. Lake Erie lies a short distance beyond, and a regular New England-style street pattern fills the land in between.
At the heart of the town is a green public square. Around it stand the county buildings and the older commercial blocks. Just east of the centre is Lake Erie College, a small private college founded in the nineteenth century, whose campus adds an open, leafy patch to the street grid.
