Pālitāna lies in the Bhavnagar district of Gujarat, on the Saurashtra peninsula. The town sits at the base of Shatrunjaya hill, and the map reflects that relationship: a compact grid of streets and lanes on the plain, with the route to the hill leaving the town and rising toward the temple complex on its summit.
Shatrunjaya is among the most sacred sites in Jainism, crowned by hundreds of temples reached by a long stepped path that pilgrims climb on foot. The town below grew to serve those visitors, and its dharamshalas, markets and residential lanes cluster toward the approach to the hill.
