Paranhos Map Poster & Print
Paranhos is one of the civil parishes of Porto and covers a large part of the city’s north. Unlike the riverside districts, it has no view of the Douro. Its character comes from long roads climbing from the historic centre and a patchwork of residential neighbourhoods, older terraced streets and modern apartment blocks. The Estrada da Circunvalação runs along its outer edge.
The parish is home to the Hospital de São João, one of the largest hospitals in Portugal, and to the Asprela university area, where several faculties of the University of Porto are grouped together. On a map this area stands out as a zone of large buildings, open grounds and car parks, very different from the fine grain of the streets further south. Metro lines connect the campus with downtown.

The major teaching hospital occupies a wide site beside the campus, and its large footprint is one of the most prominent blocks in the parish.

The Circunvalação follows Porto’s northern limit in a long, curving line that frames Paranhos and separates it from the neighbouring municipalities.
