Pokaran lies in the Jaisalmer district of Rajasthan, in the heart of the Thar Desert. On a map the town appears as a small, dense settlement of old lanes around a central fort, with main roads to Jaisalmer, Jodhpur and Bikaner meeting here and a railway line crossing the flat surrounding land.
The town's old fort, known as Balagarh, is built of local sandstone and stands at the centre of the historic quarter. Pokaran is also known internationally as the area where India conducted its nuclear tests in 1974 and 1998, in the desert ranges well beyond the town itself.
