R.S. Pora, short for Ranbir Singh Pura, lies on the level plains southwest of Jammu, close to the international border with Pakistan. From above, the town is a compact knot of streets and bazaars. Roads radiate from it across a landscape that is almost completely flat and divided into small, regular fields.
Irrigation canals and drains cross the countryside in long, straight lines, and the field boundaries between them create one of the most finely structured patterns a map can show.
