Ravenna lies on the flat plain of Emilia-Romagna, a few kilometres inland from the Adriatic coast. From above, the historic centre forms a compact, rounded shape of narrow streets surrounded by more regular districts and ring roads. To the east, the Candiano canal runs straight to the sea at Marina di Ravenna, lined with port basins and industrial quays.
The city became capital of the Western Roman Empire in 402 and later served as the seat of the Ostrogothic kingdom and of Byzantine rule in Italy. That era left the early Christian mosaics of San Vitale, the Mausoleum of Galla Placidia and other monuments, which together form a UNESCO World Heritage Site. Dante Alighieri died in Ravenna in 1321, and his tomb stands in the centre.

The canal runs east from the city to the Adriatic. It is a long straight line flanked by harbour basins, and it gives the map a strong horizontal axis.

Pine forests such as the Pineta di Classe stretch along the coast. They appear as open, lightly marked areas between the city and the sea.
