Rukungiri is the main town of Rukungiri District in western Uganda. The country here is hilly, with ridges and valleys covered in small farms, banana gardens and scattered trees. On the map, the town's streets do not follow a strict grid. They bend to follow the land, with main roads tracing ridgelines and side streets dropping down into the valleys.
The commercial centre is compact, with shops, markets and offices grouped along a few main roads. Residential areas spread across the surrounding slopes in a looser pattern. Further west, the land falls towards the floor of the Albertine Rift and Lake Edward, and the district extends towards that lower, flatter country.
