Rulenge lies in Ngara District in the Kagera region, in the far northwest of Tanzania, not far from the borders with Rwanda and Burundi. The country here is high and rolling, with ridges separated by green valleys and a patchwork of small farms covering the slopes. The town serves as a local centre for this highland farming area.
Rulenge is also known as the seat of the Catholic Diocese of Rulenge-Ngara, and church institutions such as schools and health facilities have long been part of its fabric.
