Sa'dah sits on a broad basin in the highlands of northern Yemen, and from above the town reads as two parts. At the centre is the old city, a tight cluster of lanes held inside a mud-built wall. Around it, newer streets spread in looser blocks and follow the main roads outward, thinning into fields and scattered buildings at the edge of the plain.
The town has long been tied to the Zaydi tradition. The mosque associated with Imam al-Hadi ila'l-Haqq, who settled here in the late ninth century, is one of its best-known buildings, and the old quarter is known for tall houses built in layered mud. The town lies on a wide, relatively flat plain ringed by higher ground, so the built-up area gives way to farmland and open space rather than to a hard natural edge.
