Saint-Dizier sits on the Marne in the Grand Est region and is the largest town in Haute-Marne, larger than Chaumont, the departmental capital. From above, the river and the canal running alongside it define the plan. The town stretches along the valley, with the older centre close to the water and newer districts spreading across the flatter ground beyond.
For centuries the town was known for ironworking, and cast iron made in the area was used for decorative fountains, statues and street furniture across France and beyond. Today it also hosts a major French air force base, whose runway appears as a sharp straight line on the map. The large Lac du Der reservoir lies to the southwest.
