Samfya sits on the western shore of Lake Bangweulu in Zambia's Luapula Province, and from above the lake dominates the view. The shoreline runs in a long curve of beach. The town's roads stay a short distance back from it in a loose pattern of streets and tracks that serves houses, markets and landing places for fishing boats.
Inland the map thins quickly into woodland and farmland crossed by a few main roads that connect to other towns in the province.
