Sanjan is a small town in the Valsad district of south Gujarat, close to the Arabian Sea and near the border with Maharashtra. On a map it appears as a compact settlement with a mix of narrow lanes and main roads, surrounded by farmland, orchards and smaller villages. A river passes nearby on its way to the coast, and the main railway line along the west coast runs through the area.
The town holds a special place in the history of the Parsi community. According to tradition, Zoroastrians leaving Persia landed here many centuries ago and were given permission to settle, and a memorial column in Sanjan commemorates that arrival. The town is still a place of pilgrimage and remembrance for Parsis.
