Şebin Karahisar sits in the uplands of southern Giresun, far from the province's Black Sea shore. The name refers to the black fortress on the rock above the town, and from above the logic is easy to read. The crag is the fixed point, and the streets arrange themselves around its base, following the contours rather than a grid. Roads leave the centre in long switchbacks toward the surrounding valleys.
On paper the town is a study in terrain. Short lanes climb in steps, blocks change direction from one slope to the next, and the built-up area soon thins into open hillside. They are dense at the centre and loosen toward the edges, where the mountain country begins.

Contour-following lanes
The town's lanes follow the slope instead of forming straight blocks, turning and doubling back as they climb. The result is an irregular, almost hand-drawn pattern that looks especially clear in fine black lines.
