Seligenstadt lies on the south bank of the Main in Hesse, east of Frankfurt, where the river forms the border with Bavaria. The map has a clear centre of gravity. A compact medieval old town of curving lanes sits right on the water, and newer districts spread in a looser pattern to the south and east across the flat valley floor.
The town's history goes back to Einhard, Charlemagne's adviser and biographer. He founded an abbey here in the ninth century, and its basilica still stands in the centre, with the abbey buildings and gardens next to it. On the riverfront are the remains of an imperial palace from the Staufer period, and a ferry still crosses the Main.
