Seminyih lies in the Hulu Langat district of Selangor, south-east of Kuala Lumpur. From above, an older town centre sits along the river and main road, while newer housing estates spread outwards in curving, planned layouts. Beyond them the land rises into forested hills, which appear on the map as open space broken only by a few roads.
The town is known as a quieter base within reach of the capital and of Kajang, and several university campuses and residential developments have grown in the area in recent decades. The Semenyih River runs through the district, and the reservoir upstream supplies water to parts of the Klang Valley.
