Serenje lies in Zambia's Central Province, on the Great North Road that links Lusaka with the north-east of the country and on toward Tanzania. It is the main town of its district and a regular stop for travellers and truck drivers, and its position on this long highway has shaped both its economy and its layout.
The town sits on the high plateau of central Zambia, where miombo woodland, dambos and small rivers cover the surrounding land. From above, the highway runs through as a clear, steady line, with the town centre, market and main services arranged along and near it, and residential areas extending into the bush on either side along a network of smaller roads.
Serenje is a gateway to some of the country's natural sights: Kasanka National Park, known for its huge seasonal gathering of straw-coloured fruit bats, and the Kundalila Falls both lie within reach.
