Sesimbra is a coastal town in the Setúbal district, on the south-facing coast of the Setúbal Peninsula south of Lisbon. From above, it appears as a compact settlement curving around a sheltered bay, with steep hills rising behind it. Its location protects it from Atlantic winds and has made it a fishing harbour for centuries.
The town's old centre fills the bay with narrow streets running down to the beach, where the seventeenth-century Fortress of Santiago stands on the waterfront. Above the town, on a hill, the Castle of Sesimbra has medieval walls with origins in the Moorish period. To the east lie the Arrábida hills, and to the west the headland of Cape Espichel.

The walls of the Castle of Sesimbra crown the hill behind the town, a small enclosed shape among winding roads above the bay.

West of the town the coast rises into cliffs leading toward Cape Espichel, while to the east the land climbs into the Arrábida hills.
