Shali lies on the Chechen plain south-east of Grozny, where the flat lowland begins to rise toward the foothills of the Greater Caucasus. It is one of the larger towns in Chechnya. Its streets form a broad, spread-out network of long, fairly straight roads lined with houses and gardens.
