Shamkhir is in western Azerbaijan, on the plain between the Lesser Caucasus foothills and the Kura River. The Shamkirchay river flows past the town. To the northeast, a dam on the Kura has created the large Shamkir reservoir, one of the biggest bodies of water in the country, which is a striking feature on any regional map.
The town has a notable past. The ruins of medieval Shamkir lie nearby, and in the nineteenth century German settlers founded a colony here called Annenfeld, known for winemaking. That heritage is still reflected in the orderly street layout and the vineyards and orchards around the town.
