Shangqiu Map Poster & Print
Shangqiu lies in the east of Henan on the open North China Plain, and its name recalls the Shang, one of China's earliest recorded dynasties, whose origins tradition places in this area. The land is flat in every direction, so the map is shaped by roads, railways and water rather than terrain, with the modern city laid out in wide, regular blocks.
Its most striking feature is the old town of Guide, south of the modern centre. A square Ming-era wall encloses a grid of streets, and around it a broad moat and outer embankment form a circle, so the whole complex resembles an ancient Chinese coin, round outside and square inside. Seen from above, few old towns in China are as geometric.
Shangqiu is also a transport junction, where the east–west Longhai railway meets the north–south line from Beijing to Kowloon, and high-speed lines now cross here as well. Main lines from four directions converge near the city, and their long, straight tracks cut across the street pattern in clean bands that are easy to follow on the sheet.
