Shuangtang lies in northern Jiangsu, on the broad alluvial plain that stretches across this part of eastern China. There is almost no relief to shape the map, so what you see is how people have divided the land: straight roads, rectangular fields and a town centre where the lines crowd together.
The built-up area is compact, with streets that mostly follow the same orientation as the surrounding field boundaries. Drainage ditches and irrigation channels, which are common across this plain, add thin parallel lines to the countryside.
