Sombor, in Serbia's Vojvodina province close to the Hungarian and Croatian borders, has one of the most legible town plans in the Pannonian Plain. Its historic core is encircled by the Venac, a ring of tree-lined boulevards that follows the line of the old fortifications. From above, the centre reads as a neat oval of streets with a clear edge.
