Sơn La is the capital of Sơn La Province in the mountains of north-west Vietnam. The town sits in a narrow valley. On the map, its streets stretch in a long band along the Nậm La stream and the main highway, hemmed in by steep slopes on both sides.
Side streets climb short distances into the hills before the terrain takes over. Beyond the town, the land breaks into karst peaks, terraced fields and forest. The area is home to Thai, H'Mông and other ethnic communities, and their villages lie scattered through the surrounding valleys.
