Sri Dūngargarh lies in Bikaner district, in the Thar Desert of northern Rajasthan, on the main road between Bikaner and Ratangarh. The town is compact and densely built, with narrow lanes in the older centre and newer areas stretching along the highway and the railway, while the surrounding land opens into sand and scattered farmland.
The town is named after Maharaja Dungar Singh of Bikaner, who ruled in the late nineteenth century. It serves as a local market for the surrounding villages, and like other towns in this part of Rajasthan it has close ties to families who moved to larger cities. It is a working town rather than a destination, and the map shows it plainly.
