Steinfurt was formed in 1975 when the towns of Burgsteinfurt and Borghorst were merged, and the map still shows two distinct centres linked across open Münsterland countryside. Each has its own compact core of streets, surrounded by residential districts, farmland and the scattered woods and hedgerows that are typical of this flat corner of northwestern Germany.
Burgsteinfurt grew around Schloss Steinfurt, a water castle set on an island in the river Steinfurter Aa. Next to it lies the Bagno, an eighteenth-century landscape park laid out by the counts of Bentheim-Steinfurt. On a map, the castle's water, the winding river and the park's paths give the town's western side an unusually delicate texture.
