Strumica is the main town of southeastern North Macedonia, set in the broad Strumica valley near the borders with Greece and Bulgaria. The valley is one of the country's most productive farming areas and is known for its vegetables, and the town serves as its market and administrative centre. Strumica is also known for its long-running winter carnival, which draws visitors from across the region.
On the map, the town spreads across flat ground at the foot of hills to the south. The ruins of the medieval Tsarevi Kuli fortress stand on high ground above the streets. Valley farmland
The flat Strumica valley surrounds the town with a dense patchwork of fields and farm tracks. This creates fine geometric detail around the urban area.
Old centre streets
Near the middle of town the streets are narrower and less regular. They contrast with the straighter blocks of later expansion toward the valley floor.
