Prizren lies at the foot of the Šar Mountains in southern Kosovo. Here the Prizren Bistrica river, known locally as the Lumbardhi, leaves its gorge and flows out onto the plain. The old town grew along both banks. On the map, its narrow, winding lanes contrast with the straighter streets of the newer districts on the flatter ground to the west.
The fortress of Kalaja crowns a steep hill above the centre, and paths zigzag up to its walls. Below it, an Ottoman-era stone bridge crosses the river beside Shadërvan square, the town's traditional meeting place. The Sinan Pasha Mosque stands on the riverbank close by. Churches, mosques and old houses are all within a few minutes' walk of each other.
In 1878 the town gave its name to the League of Prizren, an important moment in Albanian national history. Today it hosts DokuFest, a documentary and short film festival, every summer. The hilltop fortress overlooks the town from the east, and the curving paths up its slopes add fine, irregular lines to the map.
