Lake Skadar is the largest lake in the Balkans, shared by Montenegro and Albania. Its surface area changes with the seasons, and on a map its northern and western shores dissolve into marshes and reed beds, while the southwestern side is steeper, lined with mountains and small bays.
The Albanian city of Shkodër sits at the southeastern end, where the Buna river, known as the Bojana in Montenegro, leaves the lake and runs toward the Adriatic. The Montenegrin part is a national park, and several small islands there hold old monasteries.
