Durrës lies on the Adriatic coast of Albania, and on a map it is defined by its shoreline. The old town and port occupy a headland to the north, with docks and breakwaters cutting into the sea, while a long, gently curving beach stretches south, lined with hotels and apartment blocks. Behind the coast, the city spreads over low hills and flat land towards Tirana.
The city is among the oldest in Albania, founded in antiquity as Epidamnos and later known as Dyrrachium. A large Roman amphitheatre survives in the centre, partly surrounded by later buildings, and fragments of city walls and a Venetian tower mark the old town. Today Durrës has the country's largest port.
