Tanga lies on Tanzania's northern coast, near the border with Kenya. On the map, the town sits on the edge of a sheltered bay, with a small island near its mouth and mangrove creeks winding into the shoreline. The older centre has a fairly regular grid of wide streets laid out near the harbour.
Away from the waterfront, the town spreads inland along main roads toward the interior and the Usambara Mountains beyond. Newer neighbourhoods have a looser layout, and around the edges the pattern gives way to farmland and scattered settlements.
Tanga grew as a port during the German colonial period and was long known for the sisal plantations of the surrounding region. It was also the site of a First World War battle in 1914.
