Zanzibar City lies on the western coast of Unguja island. From above, its historic core, Stone Town, occupies a small peninsula projecting into the Indian Ocean, a maze of narrow winding lanes that is a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The seafront, with Forodhani Gardens and the old fort, forms a clear edge along the water.
Inland, beyond Creek Road, which follows the line of a former tidal creek, lies Ng'ambo, meaning the other side, where the city has grown much larger in more regular blocks. Zanzibar was a major trading port in the Indian Ocean for centuries, and it is also the birthplace of Freddie Mercury.
