Taphan Hin is a district town in Phichit province, on the broad, flat plain of lower northern Thailand. The centre is a small, fairly regular grid of streets around the market and the railway station on the northern line. From above it looks orderly and compact, with shophouse blocks lining the main roads and residential lanes filling in behind them.
The name is generally read as an old form of stone bridge, pointing to a crossing that gave the place its identity. Around the town the land is almost entirely agricultural: rice paddies divided by canals, irrigation channels and field embankments.
