Tarnobrzeg lies on the Vistula in the Subcarpathian region of southeastern Poland. It was founded by the Tarnowski family, whose seat, Dzików Castle, still stands on the northern side of town in a landscaped park. In the twentieth century the town became known for sulphur mining, which transformed the land around it.
The most striking legacy of that industry is Lake Tarnobrzeg, created by flooding a former open-pit sulphur mine. It is now a broad sheet of water near the town, used for recreation, and a very different sight from the mine that came before it. The Vistula runs past the town in its wide valley.
