Telgte lies on the Ems, just east of Münster, in the flat, green Münsterland. From above, the old town forms a compact oval close to the river, with narrow streets around the central church. The Ems loops past on the edge, and meadows and small woods run along its banks. Newer residential districts spread outward in a gentler pattern.
The town has been a Marian pilgrimage site for centuries. Its baroque chapel houses a revered image of the Virgin that still draws processions today. Telgte is also known through literature: Günter Grass set his novella The Meeting at Telgte here. In it, writers gather in 1647 during the negotiations of the Peace of Westphalia.

Flat farmland, hedgerows and scattered farms surround the town. They add a fine, patchwork texture to the outer parts of the print.
