Temecula sits in southwestern Riverside County, where Murrieta Creek and Temecula Creek meet to form the Santa Margarita River. On a map the confluence reads as a pale ribbon of floodplain along the western edge of town, with Interstate 15 tracing a firm diagonal beside it. East of the interstate the pattern changes.
