Thuwal lies on Saudi Arabia's Red Sea coast, north of Jeddah. For most of its history it was a small fishing village. Its houses clustered by the shore, with coral reefs offshore and flat, dry land inland. Parts of that village layout are still visible at the coast.
Since 2009, the King Abdullah University of Science and Technology has occupied a large site next to the village. The campus has planned roads, housing districts and research buildings arranged around a lagoon and a marina. A Thuwal map poster shows both: the irregular village streets and the orderly layout of the university.
The shoreline itself is very detailed. Lagoons, inlets and sandbars break up the coastline, and reefs lie close to shore. On a black-and-white print, the edge between land and water becomes the most detailed part of the design.

Lagoons and inlets
Shallow lagoons cut into the land along the coast. Their irregular shapes give the poster a complex, almost hand-drawn outline.
Old village
The original fishing settlement keeps a compact, irregular street pattern. It stands in clear contrast with the planned grid of the neighbouring campus.
