Tiaoshi is a town in the Chongqing municipality, south of the main city, in the hilly country typical of this part of southwest China. On a map, the landscape is folded into ridges and valleys, and roads have to wind between them rather than run straight.
The built-up area is concentrated where the terrain allows, forming a compact core of streets along the valley floor. Around it, narrow roads follow the contours of the slopes, linking villages and farms, and small streams and ponds add scattered shapes to the terrain.
