Torres Vedras is about fifty kilometres north of Lisbon, in the rolling farmland of the Oeste region. The old town gathers below a hill topped by the remains of a medieval castle. Its streets curve around the slope and then spread into newer districts on the valley floor. The Sizandro River runs past the town toward the coast a short distance to the west.
The name is known well beyond Portugal because of the Lines of Torres Vedras, a chain of forts and earthworks built in 1809 and 1810 on Wellington's orders to protect Lisbon from Napoleon's armies. Sizandro valley
The river follows a green corridor past the town, joined by the railway and main roads. Together they form a natural axis that leads the eye toward the Atlantic coast.
