Valjevo lies in western Serbia, where the Kolubara River runs through a valley ringed by hills. The town follows the river. Its oldest parts sit close to the water, and newer districts spread up the gentler slopes and along the valley floor to the east and west.
Its best-known quarter is Tešnjar, an old bazaar street of low houses and craft shops beside the Kolubara, preserved from the Ottoman period. Nearby is the Muselim's konak, linked to the events that led to the First Serbian Uprising in 1804. Together they give the centre a strong sense of continuity.
