Vavatenina is a town in the Analanjirofo region on the eastern side of Madagascar, inland from the coastal town of Fenoarivo Atsinanana. From above it is a modest cluster of streets in hilly, well-watered country. Roads follow the valleys, and the town has grown along them rather than to a formal plan.
The region's name refers to clove trees, and the surrounding landscape is agricultural, with cloves, coffee, vanilla and rice among the crops grown across eastern Madagascar.
